Bon Iver released a lyric video—always helpful when it comes to Justin Vernon’s vocals—for the new song “33 ‘God.’” As indicated by the title, the track is theological in nature, the video even opening with a quote from Psalm 22. Lightning bolts and various symbols flash throughout, and Vernon is backed by what sounds like a chorus of alien voices. It’s probably best to watch/listen in a darkened room, while contemplating your own mortality and the vastness of the universe.
“33 ‘God’” is off the upcoming album 22, A Million, which is due out in September. Vernon performed it front to back at the Eaux Claires festival in his hometown earlier this month. Following that, he debuted two pieces: “22 (OVER S∞∞N)” and “10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄.” At least the latest is considerably easier to type out.
