For many Swervedriver fans, this day has been a long time coming. Appetites were briefly whetted earlier this year with the release of a couple of new songs and the announcement of a spring tour. But today, 17 years after the release of 99th Dream, you can stream the entirety of the group’s new album, I Wasn’t Born To Lose You. While singer Adam Franklin’s voice has clearly seen some mileage since the late ’90s, the band sounds as confident and impressive as ever, building on the dreamy-but-driving vibe developed by that last album, while adding some mellower touches (particularly the languid “Everso”). The whole thing is a welcome return from one of the more idiosyncratic—and hard-edged—bands from the British shoegaze era.
