Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen are Masters of Sex: Part III

Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen are Masters of Sex: Part III

Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Sunday, July 12th. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

Masters Of Sex (Showtime, 10 p.m.): Season Three opens with Masters and Johnson preparing to take on the press, those soulsucking, headline-seeking monsters. Gwen Inhat is prepared to dive back in for another season of reviewing, but if she is anything like us, was not as much prepared for this promo with Lizzy Caplan singing:

An angel truly does walk among us.

Also noted

The Strain (FX, 10 p.m.): Meanwhile, The Strain clocks a 90 minute premiere for its second season, featuring such delights as crossbreeds and biological weapons. Kyle Fowle is tapping in to cover this show weekly, but in the meantime, check out Alex McCown‘s detailed account of visiting the set in Toronto.

Ray Donovan (Showtime, 9 p.m.): Scowly Liev Schrieber and friends are back for a third season of blackmail and face-to-face growling. In tonight’s premiere, Ray tries to help a rich family get their kidnapped son back.

Halt And Catch Fire (AMC, 10 p.m.): We haven’t talked about Halt And Catch Fire in a while, and by all accounts, that is a dumb move. Do join Dennis Perkins as he reviews this second season, with its renewed energy and badass ladies.

Regular coverage

True Detective (HBO, 9 p.m.)
Humans (AMC, 9 p.m.)
Ballers (HBO, 10 p.m.)
The Brink (HBO, 10:30 p.m.)
Golan The Insatiable (Fox, 9:30 p.m.)

Classic coverage

The Simpsons (2 p.m.): After taking a week to recover from “The Principal and the Pauper” (/July 4th), Simpsons Classic reviews and Kyle Ryan are back for the much less controversial backstory episode, “Lisa‘s Sax.”

Tomorrow in TV Club

Will Harris talked Random Roles with ubiquitous actor Raphael Sbarge, and Steven Shehori gets into one of Inside Amy Schumer’s first hit sketches with executive producer/co-creator Daniel Powell and Amy Schumer herself.

What else is on?

MTV Fandom Awards (MTV, 8 p.m.): Fandom has made its way out of the dark corners of fanfiction.net and Tumblr to a primetime MTV awards show! Hosted by Tyler Posey and Bella Thorne! And it actually happened already and you can find the results on the internet from whence the movement came! But still!

The Paw Star Game (Animal Planet, 5 p.m.): Animal Planet’s continued efforts to exploit our love of tiny fuzzy creatures have now resulted in The Paw Star Game, a three hour affront to The Golden Age of Television that should absolutely be asha –

– eh screw it, this shit’s cute. And it could always be worse, like

Miss USA 2015 (Reelz, 8 p.m.): Pass.

Watch What Happens: Live (Bravo, 11 p.m.): Tonight’s episode features Laverne Cox and Andre Leon Talley. You are very welcome.

The Hunt With John Walsh (CNN, 8 p.m.): The second season of this true crime show kicks off with an update on the first season’s true crimes, as is appropriate.

The Devil Wears Prada (HBO, 5:15 p.m.): We accidentally watched this three days in a row the other week and we did not notice and we enjoyed it every time. This feels like an accurate representation of The Devil Wears Prada’s appeal.

Wimbledon (ESPN, 9 a.m.): After Goddess Serena Williams steamrolled yet another unworthy opponent, the men’s final features a much closer match-up with the rematch of Novak Djokovic (1) versus Roger Federer (2). Will Federer reach a record eight Wimbledon wins and/or whip out personalized ”I’m the fucking best” merch? Will Djoker reclaim the Wimbledon title and/or save more stray animals like the goddamn Disney prince he is?! (What’s On Tonight may be biased, but we’re also right.)

In case you missed it

Doctor Who (Classic): Longtime Who reviewer and all around great sport Christopher Bahn bid Classic coverage goodbye for now with his review of Season 26’s ”Survival.”
