Lollapalooza is expanding to Berlin

Not content with merely vacationing in North and South America, Perry Ferrell has decided to head to the Continent next year for Lollapalooza Berlin. The latest addition to the venerable music festival will take place at the Templehof Airport on September 12-13, 2015. For this version, Farrell will partner with Festival Republic, the company behind the Reading, Leeds, and Latitude Festivals, among others.

While the original traveling Lollapalooza was retired after poor sales in 2003 and 2004, the two-day Chicago version has been one of the linchpins of the summer festival season since 2005 and is committed to stay in Grant Park through 2018. The global expansion of the Lollapalooza brand began in 2010 in Chile, followed by Brazil in 2011 and Argentina in 2014. However, the planned 2013 Tel Aviv incarnation was postponed indefinitely due to difficulties with financing and lack of headliner interest. Farrell cited “Berlin’s energy, vibrant art, fashion and music scenes” as significant factors in selecting the city for the first European iteration, but he stopped short of declaring, “Ich bin ein Berliner” on the steps of the Rathaus Schöneberg.
