London calls Kanye West, tells him to stay home
60,000 prospective Glastonbury festival-goers have a very direct message for rap superstar Kanye West: go away. A new petition is currently making the rounds on Change.org in an attempt to boot West from the top spot on this year’s iteration of the massive annual English music festival. According to the petition, “Kanye West is an insult to music fans all over the world,” who should, “pass his headline slot on to someone deserving.”
In an interview with NME, the petition’s creator Neil Lonsdale, a self-described “rock kid” who also doesn’t seem to think very highly of the Rolling Stones, admitted that while his hatred for West runs deep, he didn’t expect the kind of support that he’s received. “I was a little surprised that people have taken it as seriously as they have,” he said. “Don’t get me wrong, if it works, then I’ll be more than happy.”
This isn’t the first time that a movement was made to kick the headliner off the Glastonbury bill. Last year, 25,000 people affixed their name to a different petition to force event organizers to remove Metallica from the lineup in response to singer James Hetfield’s everyman hobby of hunting bears in his off hours. Of course, that effort failed to achieve its desired result, and instead we were all gifted with a pretty amazing short-film of Metallica dancing in bear suits while holding hunting rifles to the song “Fox On The Run” by Sweet.
