Look in the mirror, internet: Here are 2016’s most-googled pop culture terms

Well, here’s something Suicide Squad did right! Today Google released its most searched-for terms in a gamut of fields, including movies, actors, memes, politics, and more. The results are intriguing, working as a reliable index of what we’re interested in online. Interestingly, the most searched movies show the DC cinematic universe in pole position, despite the fact that Suicide Squad is objectively terrible:

  • Suicide Squad
  • Batman V Superman
  • Finding Dory
  • The Revenant
  • Zootopia
  • Hacksaw Ridge
  • Doctor Strange
  • 10 Cloverfield Lane
  • Ghostbusters
  • Me Before You

Which actors and actresses did you search for most? Harry Dean Stanton did not even make the list, strangely.

Actors

  • Brad Pitt
  • Tom Hiddleston
  • Adam Driver
  • Jesse Williams
  • Tom Holland
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan
  • Thomas Gibson
  • Sebastian Stan
  • Taylor Lautner
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda

Actresses

  • Meghan Markle
  • Marion Cotillard
  • Jodie Sweetin
  • Daisy Ridley
  • Brie Larson
  • Jenna Dewan Tatum
  • Leslie Jones
  • Kate McKinnon
  • Alicia Vikander
  • Millie Bobby Brown

While deceased people were removed from contention on the “People” searches (see later), Prince still got a late boost when it came to the year’s most-searched songs. Google also apparently made an exception for Guns N’ Roses, whose members have been dead inside since the early 1990s.

Music Artists

  • Beyoncé
  • Céline Dion
  • Kesha
  • Kehlani
  • Coldplay
  • Teyana Taylor
  • Grace Vanderwaal
  • Kanye West
  • Jacob Sartorius
  • Guns N’ Roses

Songs

  • “Formation”
  • “Purple Rain”
  • “Black Beatles”
  • “Panda”
  • “One Dance”
  • “Cake By The Ocean”
  • “Hello”
  • “Lost Boy”
  • Disturbed’s “The Sound Of Silence”
  • “I Took A Pill In Ibiza”

It has long been rumored that Netflix uses its vast network of data about viewing habits to greenlight shows. Whatever they’re doing, it’s working.

  • Stranger Things
  • Making A Murderer
  • Fuller House
  • Westworld
  • The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
  • Game Of Thrones
  • Luke Cage
  • American Horror Story
  • Lip Sync Battle
  • Dancing With The Stars

The year’s top games were all—categorically and without exception—released to withering critical reception and death threats from Reddit users, later patched along with an extensive mea culpa by the developers, and have since found success thanks to a YouTuber named DankTodd, who lives in Minnesota. DankTodd is extremely powerful.

  • Slither.io
  • Agar.io
  • Overwatch
  • Battlefield 1
  • Warcraft
  • Dark Souls 3
  • Blade & Soul
  • Madden 17
  • No Man’s Sky
  • Call Of Duty Infinite Warfare

There is literally nothing funny about the results for the most-searched people of the year, just the certainty of America’s impending cultural and economic collapse:

  • Donald Trump
  • Hillary Clinton
  • Michael Phelps
  • Bernie Sanders
  • Steven Avery
  • Ryan Lochte
  • Simone Biles
  • Cam Newton
  • Usain Bolt
  • Kevin Durant

Finally, why not: Here’s some shit about dogs!

  • How long are dogs pregnant?
  • Was goofy a dog?
  • Why does my dog lick me?
  • How can you tell how old a dog is?
  • What happens when a dog eats chocolate?
  • How to get rid of skunk smell on dog?
  • How to stop a dog from barking?
  • Can you put neosporin on a dog?
  • How to get rid of fleas on my dog?
  • How much benadryl can i give my dog?

Haha, hell yeah, your dog licks you because dogs are fucking great. But what of cats? When asked whether there was any juicy info on feline queries, a representative for Google replied, “Unfortunately no. It seems that there is a lot more people asking dog questions.” Do better in 2017, internet.
