Lucas Hedges faces gay conversion therapy in this dramatic trailer for Boy Erased
Last week, one of our Trailer Happy Hour roundups included a teaser for The Miseducation Of Cameron Post, a ‘90s-set coming-of-age story starring Chloë Grace Moretz as a girl escaping from a gay conversion camp with her friends. As we noted then, it seemed to be more about lame religious people trying to stamp down a young girl’s wild spirit than about harrowing emotional drama, but this trailer for Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased gives us all of the harrowing emotional drama we’ve been looking for. Edgerton wrote and directed the film, which is based on Garrard Conley’s memoir of the same name, and just in this two-and-a-half-minute video we get star Lucas Hedges realizing he’s gay, telling his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) that he’s gay, getting sent away for being gay, and dealing with a therapist (Edgerton) who is trying to convince him that it’s wrong to be gay.
It looks like some heavy stuff, in other words, and everybody here is putting in some real “serious actor” work—especially Crowe, who seems to be shooting for some awards with that eye twitch.
Boy Erased will be in theaters on November 2.
