At the Academy Awards two months ago, Spike Lee noted that the “ref made a bad call” in response to Green Book’s Best Picture win—implying that Peter Farrelly’s film, which has been criticized for the way it addresses racism from the perspective of a white guy, shouldn’t have taken home the big prize. Now, in a move that may or may not have something to do with the success of Green Book (but definitely looks like it does), Spike Lee seems to be making his own movie about white people realizing that racism is bad. Titled Son Of The South, the movie is an adaptation of Bob Zellner’s autobiography The Wrong Side Of Murder Creek: A White Southerner In The Freedom Movement, and it’s about the grandson of a Ku Klux Klan member who gets “pulled into the center of the civil rights movement in 1961.”

This comes from Variety, which says Lucas Till is playing Zellner and Lucy Hale is playing Carol Ann, his girlfriend. Brian Dennehy will be playing Zellner’s grandfather, with Cedric The Entertainer playing Reverand Ralph Abernathy and Sharonne Lanier playing Rosa Parks. Filming has already started, despite a previous report that Lee’s next movie would be a Vietnam vet drama for Netflix starring Chadwick Boseman, so it seems like that project has been bumped back.
