Luke Evans to star in gun-smuggling thriller from Kill List director

Luke Evans, principal smolderer of Dracula Untold and The Hobbit trilogy, is set to star in writer-director Ben Wheatley’s action shooter Free Fire. Evans will join Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Olivia Wilde, and Michael Smiley, who starred in Wheatley’s horror film Kill List.

Free Fire is set in Boston in 1978 and depicts a deal gone wrong involving two Irish businessmen trying to buy a stash of guns from a gang. Shots are fired during the exchange, and the movie becomes a run-and-gun (or maybe even stop-and-pop, depending on how tired everyone gets) struggle for survival. According to Wheatley, the movie will be “muscular, tough, and spare”—like those parts of Kill List with all the male nudity and screaming. The Down Terrace director cites films like Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs as inspiration, which gives Evans a 50-50 chance of making it to the credits.
