Luke Skywalker and Captain America are arguing over who would win in a fight
Sure, there are plenty of downsides to Disney owning every major creative property under the sun. But one of the few benefits is that all the mashup, crossover events that were once limited to the fantasies of comic book nerds could now become a reality. So, when Luke Skywalker and Captain America—or, more accurately, the actors who play them—start talking about which one of them would win in a fight, we’re forced to take this potential face-off entirely too seriously.
“Can a lightsaber cut through Captain America’s shield?” is right up there with great philosophical conundrums like, “Can God make a stone so heavy that even he can’t lift it?” To some, the answer seems obvious. To others, not so much. When a fan posed the question to the only two men capable of answering, Mark Hamill didn’t hesitate.
Presumably, Hamill is basing the first half of his answer on the evidence provided by the MCU films, all of which points to the fact that that damn shield is unbreakable. On the other hand, if Luke Skywalker were on his own turf and was pushed to the point of having to defend himself—Cap wouldn’t stand a chance against the full powers of the Force. Naturally, Chris Evans took this for the threat that it is and called the aging Jedi “foolish” for not recognizing he had more vibranium weapons up his sleeve.
Considering each successive Star Wars film gives the Jedi more power and acrobatic fighting abilities, one is tempted to side with Hamill here. But we all saw Captain America hold his own against a giant purple alien dictator, so, really, all bets are off. It turns out the “science” experts over at Nerdist attempted to answer the question of who would win a couple years ago and came up with, “kind of both.” Regardless, the real question is: Why are these two pure-hearted heroes fighting to the death in the first place? What has the universe come to?
