Lupe Fiasco calls for a boycott of Spin magazine over a bad review

Lupe Fiasco is encouraging his fans to boycott Spin, after the magazine gave his new video a bad review. It all happened after Brandon Soderberg, the writer who runs Spin’s hip-hop blog, deemed Fiasco’s new clip for “Bitch Bad” a blatant grab for socially conscious publicity, saying:

“'Bitch Bad' is, to play Lupe's game and get histrionic, how you ‘debase’ a ‘culture.’ You twist a rap song into poorly thought-out grab for attention, and give it a muddled video, all under the guise of ‘starting a conversation,’ which implicitly suggests that rap music isn't having these conversations already.”

Never one to shy away from confrontation, Fiasco went directly at Soderberg on Twitter, saying he intends “to do my best to expose you and your publication 4 ur actions” and that his fans should boycott the magazine, holding out for a “higher standard.”

Fiasco’s more rabid fans have reacted in kind (even though it’s questionable whether all that many of them read Spin in the first place). They’ve changed their Twitter avatars to a “Boycott Spin Magazine” logo, and have launched started an online petition calling for a boycott of the publication, despite the idea of making a petition about a boycott seeming kind of pointless.

“Bitch Bad” is off Fiasco’s forthcoming record, Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1, which is due out Sept. 25.
