Lupita Nyong’o tries to make chess exciting in the trailer for The Queen Of Katwe

Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o is joining the ranks of Joe Mantegna, Computer ChessAndrew Bujalski, and everybody else who’s ever toiled to turn the game of kings into a watchable cinematic experience. Nyong’o is currently starring in Disney’s The Queen Of Katwe, where she plays the mother of a young chess prodigy (newcomer Madina Nalwanga) who uses her skills to pull herself out of poverty in Uganda.

How does she do it? By hitting every page in the “inspirational sports drama” playbook, if the movie’s new trailer is anything to go by. Complete with an inspirational mentor (David Oyelowo) that teaches her about her inner talents, and every single chess metaphor it’s possible to cram into two minutes of video, the movie looks to track the rise of its real-world subject, chess champion Phiona Mutesi, as she overcomes dismissive sneers and an omnipresent inspirational soundtrack to rise to success on the world stage.

The Queen Of Katwe arrives in theaters on September 23.
