Notorious smile terrorist M.I.A. has revealed that her upcoming Matangi has been delayed from December to April due to a controversial excess of happiness. "I finished it and then I handed the record in, like a couple of months ago. They’re like ‘You need to, like, darken it up a bit,’" M.I.A. tells Australia's The Gold Coast of her latest attack on the oppressive forces of frownies. "It’s like, ‘We just built you up as the public enemy number one, and now you’re coming out with all this positive stuff'"—referring, of course, to the acts of rebellion she'd engineered last year, such as giving the finger at the Super Bowl and tweeting out the phone number of a New York Times reporter who'd written a story in which M.I.A. was framed with a truffle French fry, two incidents that affected millions with laughter.
M.I.A. didn't elaborate on her plans to make her new album any less positive ("I don’t know what it is, but as soon as I work that out…," she explained, sort of), though it's possible she could use this opportunity to insert some random, politically simplistic agitprop and Sri Lanka references. Failing that, the album will be slapped with a warning label, "CONTAINS GRAPHICALLY GOOD VIBES."
