It’s been three years since Mac DeMarco released Salad Days, a record that saw him delving into the worlds of psych-pop and and lo-fi soft rock. And for his new album This Old Dog, which is coming May 5 on Captured Tracks, DeMarco threw a wrench into his own system. “The majority of this album is acoustic guitar, synthesizer, some drum machine, and one song is electric guitar. So this is a new thing for me,” said DeMarco in a press release for the record, and the first two songs paired with it show it.
Aside from similar naming conventions, “This Old Dog” and “My Old Man” show different sides of DeMarco’s approach. The former feels like a lighter take on his brand of slacker-folk, while the latter makes prominent use of a drum machine and a multi-tracked acoustic guitar. Pre-orders for This Old Dog are available now, and DeMarco has also announced a tour in support of the album. If you’re lucky, you just might get to see him wear a hat or two.
