Macbeth director reteaming with Michael Fassbender for the Assassin’s Creed movie

If people aren’t already interested in New Regency’s ever-growing stable of movies based on Ubisoft video games, then it seems determined to force people to be interested by hiring people with interesting résumés. “Oh, so you don’t want to see Splinter Cell or Watch Dogs movies?” they say to the doubters. “But what if one maybe has Tom Hardy and the other is written by the Zombieland guys? Boom.”

The latest move by the studio, as reported by Variety, is to hire Justin Kurzel—a director who’s currently working on a new adaptation of Macbeth—to helm its Assassin’s Creed movie. Kurzel’s Macbeth features Michael Fassbender, who is also signed on to star in Assassin’s Creed, so the pair seem to have really hit it off. Or maybe they both just recognize that Macbeth and Assassin’s Creed have a lot in common. After all, both have historical settings, both revolve around how fun it is to stab people, both are widely regarded as some of mankind’s greatest work, and they both secretly take place within an elaborate computer simulation. Shakespeare was really ahead of his time on that last one.
