Magnum, P.I. gains sequel, loses mustache
According to Deadline, ABC has just announced that it’s developing a new Magnum, P.I. series with Leverage creator John Rogers and Eva Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment production company. This won’t just be some shameless cash-in on the lasting appeal of the Magnum, P.I. brand, though, it’ll be a totally new sequel series simply called Magnum that focuses on Magnum’s presumably mustache-less daughter, Lily “Tommy” Magnum, who also decides to become a private investigator in Hawaii and will probably drive whatever the modern equivalent of a Ferrari 308 GTS is—probably something sensible like a red Ford Focus. Also, there will be some kind of ongoing mystery about “the blown spy operation” that ended Lily Magnum’s Navy Intelligence career, because millennials like serialized stories and daughters of classic TV characters.
The Lily Magnum character appeared in a few episodes of the original show, living with the ex-wife of Tom Selleck’s Magnum Sr. until the end of the series when he decided to man-up and take care of his own kid. The Deadline story doesn’t say if Selleck will come back in any capacity, but Magnum could always just say he’s too busy being Donnie Wahlberg’s dad over on CBS.
