Maika Monroe to be welcomed to Earth in Independence Day 2

In what’s slowly—20 years slowly—becoming the Chinese Democracy of summer blockbuster sequels, Independence Day 2 (ID42? RJD2? C3P0?) is now inching ever closer to fruition.

Now Variety reports that It Follows star and professional kiteboarder Maika Monroe will be welcomed to Earth as the female lead in the blockbuster sequel. Monroe will play the daughter of the President of the United States, played by returning favorite Bill Pullman, and the love interest of new addition Liam Hemsworth. Presumably Monroe, who has already been called the next “scream queen” as a result of her roles in this year’s word-of-mouth horror hit It Follows and 2014’s slickly executed The Guest, is looking to move on to Jamie Lee Curtis-style legitimacy before 15 years fly by and she ends up doing appearances at car shows and drive-ins.

As we previously reported, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jessie Usher have also joined the cast, along with Independence Day veterans Jeff Goldblum and Vivica A. Fox. Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin are returning as producers. Independence Day 2 is slated to start production in May and hit theaters June 24, 2016, because there isn’t a better day to release an Independence Day sequel.
