Finally giving pot smokers an excuse to smoke pot and watch a movie, the documentary filmmakers behind the new Mile High: The Comeback Of Cannabis are offering free weed to anyone who comes to their movie. It’s a strategy that a lot of documentarians and people who are stoned have fantasized about, but it’s one that producer Adam Hartle and co-writer Anthony Hashem (yes) were actually able to put into practice, thanks to Colorado’s legalization of recreational marijuana.
“I’ll be standing outside the Mayan and Boulder theaters before each screening this week, handing out a small amount of legal marijuana to anyone over 21 with a valid ID to take home to enjoy responsibly,” Hartle tells Deadline. “No purchase necessary, but we highly encourage you to stay and watch the film.” (Hartle is also a stand-up comedian, we now state redundantly.)
According to Hashem, the two have tried this approach with a few test audiences already, these tests leading them to the scientific conclusion that people who smoke pot before their pot movie enjoyed it more than those who didn’t. “What we’ve found is the 20- to 40-year-old demographic who have used cannabis before absolutely love it, and the older crowd who hasn’t find it less favorable,” Hashem said about his documentary covering Colorado’s Amendment 64, as well as about how weed works.
As of press time, Marvel has not yet announced a similar strategy for Guardians Of The Galaxy, because they are squares.
