Malin Akerman and Taissa Farmiga to star in horror comedy The Final Girls

Fans of The Cabin In The Woods may soon have a new meta-fictional movie about the nature of horror cinema to sink their teeth into. Sony Pictures Worldwide has picked up the rights to the horror comedy The Final Girls, about a teenager who gets sucked into a slasher movie made in the ’80s. While there, she’s reunited with her dead mother, the star of the movie, and the two renew their relationship while trying to outrun the film’s maniacal killer. Director Todd Strauss-Schulson, whose credits include A Very Harold And Kumar 3D Christmas and the pilot for Onion News Empire, described the The Final Girls as only a film director can—with a storm of movie references: “It’s Pleasantville in a trashy horror movie from the ’80s with a little Back To The Future thrown in and a spoon full of Terms Of Endearment with a dash of Scream and two dollops of Purple Rose Of Cairo for good measure.”

The Final Girls will star Taissa Farmiga, sister to Vera and recently seen as a witch-in-training on American Horror Story, and Malin Akerman, who played the Silk Spectre in the Watchmen movie. Meanwhile—and confusingly—yogurt enthusiast and original final girl Jamie Lee Curtis is set to star in an ABC Family series of the same name, which should make the coming years good ones for young girls running for their lives from masked killers, but in an ironic way.
