Mantis

Who she is: Mantis

Her power: She possesses empathic powers that allow her to sense and manipulate others’ emotions through mere touch. She also seems quite agile—and there’s this whole “able to make others fall asleep instantly” thing.

Her story: Mantis first appears in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, where she serves as the assistant/slave to Ego, Peter Quill’s father. Her empathic powers are the only thing that allows Ego to sleep. She meets the Guardians when they arrive to take refuge from The Sovereign, a genetically enhanced race hunting them down. Mantis explains that Ego found her in her larval state as an orphan and took her to raise aas his own. She uses her abilities to reveal deeply held feelings on the part of them team, including those of Peter for Gamora. Though initially obedient to Ego despite her knowledge of his murderous ways, she ends up joining the Guardians when they learn Ego plans to destroy all life in the Galaxy, in large part because she bonds with the heroes—especially Drax. Mantis uses her powers to try and keep him sedated. It only works for a time, but it’s enough for them to ultimately defeat Ego. By film’s end, it appears she has joined the Guardians.

Played by: Pom Klementieff

Currently, Mantis is: Patiently waiting to show up in the movies.
