Marc Maron to step out of the garage and into the ring on Netflix’s G.L.O.W.
Marc Maron, taking a break from wrestling with his own crippling self-doubt, will be joining the cast of Netflix’s new comedy series based on The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, G.L.O.W. Maron is coming on board as Sam Sylvia, who according to The Hollywood Reporter is “a washed-up Hollywood director who has a very complicated history with women—and new must lead 14 of them on the journey to wrestling stardom,” including BoJack Horseman’s Alison Brie.
The comedian—whose IFC series wrapped up its fourth and final season earlier this year—is no stranger to kayfabe, having portrayed either a nicer or even more grumpy version of himself on Maron. There’s no word on whether Maron’s character will be a “face” or a “heel,” but it’s fairly certain that he’s going to at least assume that everyone thinks he’s a heel.
The new show comes from Orange Is The New Black creator Jenji Kohan and Liz Flahive of Homeland, and is a fictionalized take on the G.L.O.W. wrestling promotion that became a syndicated hit from 1986 to 1990. G.L.O.W. was the only “professional sports entertainment” show at the time that utilized actual seasons, dropping and adding characters before each run of the show and introducing the world to such fan favorites as The Heavy Metal Sisters, Amy The Farmer’s Daughter, and Big Bad Mama. The wrestling organization was also the subject of the 2011 documentary G.L.O.W.: The Story Of The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling.
