Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn in top-secret DC superhero project
Despite assurances from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo that a Black Widow movie is a great idea that somebody should make someday, Marvel itself is still dragging its feet on making female-led superhero movies. Meanwhile, DC and Warner Bros. already have Wonder Woman set for next June, and now they’re even getting ready to top The Avengers with a movie about an all-female (or mostly female) superhero team, starring Margot Robbie as her Suicide Squad character Harley Quinn.
This comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says the project is pretty early, but it’s coming from a secret female writer and it’s based on a secret pitch that came from Robbie herself. Apparently, when she got cast as Quinn, she “dove deep into the comics to learn as much as possible” about the Joker’s former girlfriend, and “she fell for DC’s female characters” in the process. We don’t know anything concrete yet, but there’s talk of the movie including Batgirl and the traditionally female-based superhero team Birds Of Prey as well. There’s no word on any male characters who might be involved, but those who do make an appearance will hopefully be killed and stuffed into refrigerators so the female heroes can be sufficiently inspired to move their own plots forward. (Either that, or they’ll just be love interests who don’t do anything important beyond making out with the real heroes.)
