Coming Soon (via Variety) has confirmed the rumor—started by Mark Hamill—that Mark Hamill will be directing an adaptation of Mark Hamill's comic book, The Black Pearl. Mark Hamill, perhaps best known as the actor who played Mark Hamill in Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, told a crowd at this past weekend's Los Angeles Comedy Shorts Festival that he's been working on his first big-screen project as director, hinting that "at first glance it's a drama, but it has dark humor." While that could just as easily describe an adaptation of the Bible, it turns out Mark Hamill was indeed talking about The Black Pearl, a dramatic and darkly humorous comic about a reluctant superhero (no pirates) written by Mark Hamill and his cousin, Eric Johnson. Says AP, Mark Hamill came clean about the project today at Cannes, adding that he would not appear in the film ("That would be distracting to me. I don't want people to go, 'Oh, look, there's the gratuitous cameo thing by the egomaniac'"), and reiterating that he had accepted a lower budget for The Black Pearl in order to retain more creative control. Creative control obviously means a lot to Mark Hamill.
