It’s impossible to make a tasteful joke about the scandal of Catholic priests molesting young parishioners—yes, there are plenty of jokes, but none of them tasteful—so let’s play this straight: Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, and Stanley Tucci are all in talks to star in Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight, based on The Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Catholic Church’s cover-up of child molesters in Massachusetts. Liev Schreiber and Aaron Eckhart are also reportedly interested in the project, while Rachel McAdams has received a formal offer to play the female lead, former Boston Globe reporter and current NPR host Sacha Pfeiffer. McCarthy, who has also signed on to direct, co-wrote the script with The West Wing’s Josh Singer, who knows something about working with talented acting ensembles and controversial topics.
