Mark Wahlberg battles oil spill, possibly dinosaurs in Deepwater Horizon trailer

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010 was the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, and an ecological disaster. BP was ultimately held responsible by the U.S. justice system (well, as much as a huge corporation can be these days) but the first trailer for Peter Berg’s Deepwater Horizon offers up a different culprit—extinct dinosaurs.

Mark Wahlberg, who teamed up with Berg for Lone Survivor and the forthcoming Patriots Day, stars as Mike Williams, an electrician on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. He’s introduced with much pride by his daughter as an “explorer like Dora,” but presumably with a much larger carbon footprint. The young girl, who seems to be the only kid in the world with an active dislike of prehistoric creatures, is practicing a class presentation about her dad’s job, which she’s been led to believe involves doing something about all that oil the “mean old dinosaurs” made with their fossils. She concludes by saying her father “tames the dinosaurs,” then punctures an upside-down soda can, whose ensuing spray foreshadows the manmade natural disaster at the center of the film.

Production on the film was similarly unwieldy, as directors came and went while Malkoviches lingered. Deepwater Horizon also stars Kate Hudson as Mike’s wife, who’s also content to let their daughter espouse anti-dinosaur rhetoric, as well as Kurt Russell and Jane The Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez. The film is scheduled for release on September 30.
