Martin Scorsese's Netflix mob drama The Irishman gets ominous new teaser
You’d think we’d be more excited for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, a mobster flick starring Al Pacino that reunites the Goodfellas director with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Bobby Cannavale, and Harvey Keitel. Unfortunately, Scorsese’s story of real-life gangster Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran and labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa has been consumed with reports of its ill-sounding de-aging technology. Scorsese collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker said that the cast will be digitally de-aged (or “youthified”) for half of the entire film, which is apparently resulting in a very expensive endeavor that she repeatedly calls “a risk.”
Don’t be surprised, then, that film’s new teaser doesn’t feature any real footage. It does, however, offer some dialogue, including the innocuous-sounding, “I heard you paint houses,” a phrase that just so happens to be the name of the Charles Brandt book upon which The Irishman is based. It also displays, in bold, smoky letters, the talent on display in the movie, which is reason enough for us to weather the uncanny valley that so often arises with CGI trickery.
The Irishman hits Netflix this fall. A trailer with some actual footage? Who knows when that’s coming.
