Martin Starr’s role in Spider-Man: Homecoming is suitably nerdy
Ever since he scored an invite to Spider-Man: Homecoming, we’ve been wondering what Martin Starr will get up to in the superhero world. Would he play henchman to Michael Keaton’s Vulture, or would he just end up being a startled but grateful bystander, a la Joy Bryant in Spider-Man 2? The Silicon Valley star has gone ahead and put an end to the speculation, telling The Wrap that he‘s part of the faculty at Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) high school: “I’m the academic decathlon coach and one of the teachers at the school, so I have a bit of a thing in it.”
Starr does appear in the film’s trailer, where he looks every bit the factoid-dropping mentor in a gold jacket and tie. Though he hasn’t seen the finished film yet, he did elaborate on its direction, which will give us a young, confused Peter again: “It’s capitalizing on popularity and a story that’s very rich and dense, so there’s a lot left to tell. And this isn’t a familiar take on it—this is a unique kind of take of a younger Spider-Man trying to figure out life again.”
You can catch Starr in the new season of Silicon Valley, which premieres April 23.
