Matt Damon’s more determined than ever in new The Martian trailer
The latest trailer for The Martian shows the indomitable spirit of (one) man—that’s Mark Watney (Matt Damon), Earth’s most charismatic botanist. As you may already know, Watney is stranded on Mars after a space storm forces his space crew to get the hell off the planet. He’s presumed dead, but he’s not quite there yet. Sure, he’ll have find a way to make water and grow food to last the four years it’ll take for NASA to rescue him—but he seems pretty damn resolute, vowing to “science the shit” out of his new mission.
Damon’s Watney appears successful in his rainmaking and crop-growing, and he thumbs his nose at Neil Armstrong while waiting on the rescue team. He’s cheerfully unaware of the NASA official (Jeff Daniels) who doesn’t see the dollar sense in mounting a rescue. But Captain Lewis (Jessica Chastain) rallies her astronaut troops (played by Kate Mara, Michael Peña, and Sebastian Stan) for a mutiny, and we see them blasting back into space.
The Martian also features Sean Bean, Donald Glover, Kristen Wiig, and Chiwetel Ejiofor hanging out at mission control, with Glover’s character piping up to say he’s figured out a way to get Watney home. A happy ending isn’t a foregone conclusion, though, since space storms don’t seem to be all that rare on Mars.
The Martian hits theaters October 2.
