Matt Dillon to play a serial killer for Lars Von Trier

Director Lars Von Trier has announced the cast for The House That Jack Built, his latest exercise in cinematic misery. Deadline reports that Downfall star Bruno Ganz and Matt Dillon have both signed on for the project, with Dillon playing a brilliant serial killer across 12 years of his “artistic” career.

Originally conceived as a TV show, Jack was later retooled as Von Trier’s first film since Nymphomaniac came out in two parts in 2013. Announcing the casting, Von Trier praised both Dillon and Ganz—who plays a mysterious figure named “Verge,” who periodically talks with Jack about his life—saying, “The two gentlemen have each figured as milestones in my cinematic development. Besides being an epochal match, they are excellent actors and fit quite organically into ‘my cinematic family.’” We’re not sure how big and happy said family might be, given Von Trier’s usual subject matter; in any case, The House That Jack Built is set to start filming soon, once it casts four prominent female roles for terrible things to happen to.
