Matthew Lillard is a "dragonborn sorcerer" in this fantasy role-playing series from Deborah Ann Woll

If years of superhero movies starring everyone from Anthony Hopkins to Angela Bassett haven’t made it clear already, every celebrity you can think of is some degree of nerd or, in a distinction that really doesn’t matter, happy to settle into the pocket of Big Nerd. Nowhere is this clearer than in Relics And Rarities, a web series where Daredevil and True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll leads a group of dorks, celebrities included, through a fantastical role-playing adventure.

The Nerdist-hosted show’s first episode went up last night and gives a pretty good indication of what to expect. Woll, as Professor Roundland, leads a group of regular players on a journey to “find arcane antiquities from around the globe and beyond.” Along the way, they’re joined by celebrity guests. The trailer teases future appearances from Sam Richardson, Janina Gavankar, Simone Missick, Woll’s Daredevil co-star Charlie Cox, and Kevin Smith, who probably signed onto this thing before the idea was even conceived (even if he says he’s “never played a serious RPG” before; sure, dude).

The real highlight of the premiere, of course, is Matthew Lillard walking out as Allister Goldenfang, a “6'6" dragonborn golden dragon sorcerer” and medium who’s here to cast spells with his trademark, slightly unhinged enthusiasm. There’s precedent for Lillard’s RPG bonafides, as this excellent clip of the actor playing D&D against kids back in 2005 demonstrates. (Why it’s introduced by a woman in a bikini making fun of his cultural relevancy, on the other hand, is harder to explain.)

Even if people playing RPGs isn’t quite your thing, the first episode is at least worth checking out for Lillard—sorry, Allister—excitedly playing a pretend Scottish wizard in jeans and a T-shirt.
