Matthew Vaughn confirms Kingsman 2 title and plot, remains coy on butt stuff
Like a well-tailored spy operating with stylish discretion, Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman sequel has revealed little beyond the casting of Julianne Moore, and the return of Edward Holcroft as privileged snot Charlie Hesketh. Now ComicBookMovie.com is reporting that director Matthew Vaughn has declassified the film’s title, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, along with several plot details in a recent interview with Empire magazine. In the interview, Vaughn suggests that the sequel’s plot will continue to serve as a paper-thin mechanism for delivering kinetically creative violence. “You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence,” he says. “I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you’ve never seen before.”
The storyline involves the destruction of the Kingsman headquarters, and requires Taron Egerton’s Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong) to enlist the help of their U.S. counterparts at the Statesman. Of course, going to see a Kingsman movie for the plot is like stepping out to a fancy steakhouse and ordering the house salad. The important stuff will be the gonzo set pieces, which include an obligatory barroom brawl—presumably with even more mug-shattering forehead violence—a skiing scene, robot dogs, a henchman missing an arm instead of both legs, and “a massive fucking frankfurter.” While that last item could merely be alliteration on Vaughn’s part, it’s entirely possible that The Golden Circle will be penetrated by a colossal, fornicating hot dog.
The interview also features some concept art, including a submarine (presumably so Eggsy can join the mile-below club), the burned-out rubble of the Kingsman headquarters, Julianne Moore’s villainous lair known as “Poppyland,” and the Statesman facility, which operates ostensibly as a bourbon distillery under the watch of Halle Berry.
