Ti West and Mia Goth’s decades-spanning, genre-bending, hyper-stylized X trilogy is coming to a close this July (maybe). With MaXXXine, Goth leaves Pearl behind and dives back into the role of the aspiring starlet Maxine Minx. Goth played Maxine and an elderly Pearl in X, but here, she’s really trying to help Maxine make a name for herself. This time, West speeds into another era—the 1980s—for a full-on urban slasher homage in the vein of Maniac, Maniac Cop, and probably a third movie with the word “Maniac” in it.

Unlike the previous trailers, we’re also treated, for the first time, to one of the movies within the movie. The brief shots of “Puritan II” are a long time coming, considering this series has always been about a starry-eyed dreamer looking to escape their horrifying circumstances and hitting it big in Hollywood. Well, West and Goth have finally made it to La La Land, and the rotten luck that has followed Maxine since the 70s catches up with her. Being the sole survivor of the X massacre has made her a target for creepy producers and leather-clad killer. Both X and Pearl were steeped in themes of censorship and sexuality on screen, and MaXXXine deals with the Satanic Panic of the Reagan era, a trend in the midst of a reboot of its own. As if that wasn’t enough, the movie also teases the Psycho house at Universal and a scenery-chewing turn from a mustachioed Kevin Bacon. All of this is adding up to a movie that can’t arrive soon enough. Maxine may never work in this town again, but her last job looks like a killer.

MaXXXine opens on July 5, but if you can’t wait to see her, X is getting a one-night-only re-release on June 18. A24 is sweetening the deal with an extra post-credited preview of West and Goth’s latest.
