Mia Goth’s double role, as both killer and survivor, in Ti West’s 2022 horror hit X was one of the most eye-catching things to happen in the world of horror in a minute—a seemingly perfect collaboration between star and writer/director, as the two seemed lock-step aligned in their pursuit of the movie’s messy but irresistible ideas about the interplay between sex, violence, and the desire for fame. The duo went prequel in the immediate aftermath of the film’s low-budget success, releasing Pearl just six months later—but they haven’t been shy about hinting at a direct sequel, either.

Now, after months of teasing, West and A24 have released the first full trailer for MaXXXine, a full follow-up to X. Starring Goth (of course), the film picks up 6 years after the first film’s bloody conclusion, in 1985. (You can tell it’s the 1980s, because everything is scored to Animotion’s “Obsession.”) As we reunite with Maxine Minx, she’s attempting to make the jump from adult film to conventional movie-making, leveraging the aftermath of what happened to her and her friends at that Texas farmhouse in a way that catches the attention of director Elizabeth Debicki. But as news reports about real-life serial killer the Night Stalker flood the low-def airwaves, Maxine finds out the past isn’t done with her. (Also, it has a super-skeevy mustache, and looks and sounds a lot like Kevin Bacon.)

West, meanwhile, is very cheerfully getting his Brian De Palma on, filling the screen with lurid reds, peep show aesthetics, and liberal splashes of blood. The whole thing looks genuinely overwhelming—but what more could you want from a film that promises to build on the momentum that Goth and West have been building with this franchise for the last two years?

MaXXXine hits theaters on July 5.
