Maybe... Maybe Not

Maybe... Maybe Not

It's The Odd Couple meets La Cage Aux Folles when a philandering straight man is kicked out of his girlfriend's apartment and winds up living with a gay acquaintance. Maybe… Maybe Not is Germany's most popular film of all time, and while that fact is difficult to fathom given the film's rather ordinary nature, it's also considerably more entertaining than any Wacky German Sex Farce has a right to be. The punchlines practically announce themselves several scenes before their arrival; it's the type of movie where you know a pregnant woman will go into labor at the least convenient time, and that people will walk into rooms just in time to get a false impression about what they see. Still, the relationship between the two leads is sweetly played, with a touch of melancholy that takes most of the edge off the more insufferable elements. To give you a better sense of the material, the inevitable Hollywood remake could easily star Stephen Baldwin, Bronson Pinchot and Lauren Holly, and be directed by Penny Marshall.
