Maybe Sharp Objects will pick up the pace this week—then again, maybe it won’t
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, July 29. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
Sharp Objects (HBO, 9 p.m.): We’re hooked on Sharp Objects, even with its languid, disturbingly plodding pace, as director Jean-Marc Vallée continues the stellar work that won him those Big Little Lies Emmys. Every close-up is a foreshadowing, every flashback appropriately devastating, though we may be reaching our lifetime limit of watching scenes in which Amy Adams drinks vodka out of a Evian bottle while driving within the next few weeks or so. So while some people are understandably frustrated with the show’s slow pace, we are content to wallow right along with Adams’ Camille, even though it puts us in a weird mood to kick off the week. In tonight’s episode, “Ripe,” “Camille agrees to show Richard (Chris Messina) some of Wind Gap’s crime scenes, though the tour opens up old wounds,” since it looks like they visit that ominous shed. More Chris Messina? Show, go as slow as you want. Laura Bogart will be on hand to help us process it all afterward for Sharp Object’s first and only season.
Regular coverage
The Affair (Showtime, 9 p.m.)
Preacher (AMC, 10 p.m.)
Wild card
Naked And Afraid Of Sharks (Discovery, 9 p.m.): Discovery Channel wraps up Shark Week with a special two-hour edition of Naked And Afraid: “Naked And Afraid Of Sharks.” We can imagine that the nakedness only adds to the shark terror—just ask that girl in the opening scene of Jaws. In this two-hour episode, five former N&A contestants are stranded on an island and have to venture into shark-infested waters for food—while naked, naturally. Hope you all had a great Shark Week!
