McDonald’s is testing out a walk-thru for drunk late-night eaters
After wasting years trying to convince people to give “healthier options” a try, the fast-food industry has lately embraced the idea of garbage meals that make people want to die (but in a delicious way). Recently, a McDonald’s in Wales dove headfirst into this new lack of pretentiousness, but rather than doing anything weird with the food, it decided to set up a late-night “walk-thru” that allows patrons to place an order while stumbling home from a “night out.” That comes from The Sun (via Grub Street), which says that the walk-thru achieved “instant popularity” after its test run last week, and now the visionaries who run that particular Welsh McDonald’s are planning to make it a regular thing.
The key to the whole scheme is that this McDonald’s is open 24 hours a day, but only accepts orders through the drive-thru after a certain point. Combine that with its close proximity to a popular nightclub, and it was practically throwing away money from all of the business it was missing out on because of people who were too drunk to drive. Now, the sober car people can order their McBangers And Mash (or whatever else you get from a Welsh McDonald’s) right alongside the party people coming down from all of that Welsh dance music.
There’s no word on any McDonald’s locations outside of Wales picking this up, but considering that sitting in your car and having someone bring you food is one of the most American things ever, we can’t imagine it’ll come over here to the colonies anytime soon. Plus, American towns tend to have so many fast-food options that if you get turned away from a McDonald’s for trying to walk up to a drive-thru, a less-discerning Taco Bell or Burger King will probably welcome you with open arms.
