Melissa Leo to lead the cast of I’m Dying Up Here

Deadline reports Melissa Leo, Sebastian Stan, and Clark Duke (Hot Tub Time Machine) have all joined Showtime’s I’m Dying Up Here. The dark comedy is set in ’70s Los Angeles and will be executive produced by Jim Carrey and David Flebotte, who adapted William Knoedelseder’s eponymous book. Leo will lead the cast as Goldie, a “brassy comedy club owner who rules over her business with an iron fist and nurtures her comedians with tough love,” which is a description that fits most of Leo’s roles to date if you just swap out the occupation.

Goldie’s club will draw all manner of comedians to be mentored, from Duke’s Larry, a “ballsy” Boston comedian, to RJ Cyler’s (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) young stand-up Adam, who will do “anything to make it in comedy.” Stan will have a recurring role as Clay, a “funny, charming comedian on the rise,” who is idolized by fellow comedian Cassie (Ari Graynor), who also happens to be his ex. So far, everyone sounds awfully well adjusted, which means they probably won’t be very funny at all—unless Adam turns out to be inspired by Carrot Top or something.
