At last, someone has figured it out: Instead of spending $140 million on a 140-minute movie about men who try to shoot other men with guns, why not spend $90 million on a 90-minute movie populated by a wide variety of bizarre alien species? Instead of hacking out an endless string of explosions, chases, and crashes, why not just make a fast-paced, special-effects-driven comedy that's so packed with visual stimuli, a big-time climax isn't even necessary? Of course, that's not as easy as it sounds, and Men In Black deserves credit for supplementing its special effects with a breezy script and genuinely charismatic performances by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. If nothing else, the movie's shortcomings—the lack of a discernible plot, the fact that the titular men in black never seem to be in danger—are offset by its lightning-quick pace.
