Merely adding “-ing” to movie titles makes a significant difference

The addition of three little letters can truly alter the meaning of a movie’s title and suggest all kinds of new plot possibilities. That’s what Reddit learned last week when a user called Racistpuffs posed this deceptively simple question to the site’s users: “Add ‘ing’ to the end of a movie title, what is the movie about now?” The answers soon flowed in from all directions. With the addition of that all-important suffix, Hook becomes Hooking. Kill Bill becomes Kill Billing. And then there is Pacific Rim to consider, lightly. The question provoked so many amusing, imaginative responses that Upvoted decided to turn the thread into the basis for an art project, tasking resident artist Li-Anne Dias with creating posters to go with the newly gerund-ified titles. The results are, to say the least, enlightening. Who knew, for instance, that all James Bond has been seeking over the last half-century is some meaningful human interaction?

And it’s possible that Pat Morita was just stringing poor Ralph Macchio along all those years. The real kicker is, Billy Zabka and Martin Kove were probably in on the whole thing from the beginning.

The entire Saw franchise, on the other hand, could have been one long episode of Home Improvement or This Old House.

For those who might be wondering: No, Pacific Rimming was not one of the suggested Reddit titles honored with a fake Upvoted poster. Nor, for that matter, was Gone With The Winding, “the story of the advent of digital watches.” Fans will simply have to make their own posters, or better yet their own full-length feature movies, to go with these intriguing titles.
