MGMT remains committed to fan alienation, announces new Aphex Twin-influenced album

MGMT says it's getting ready to drop another album after working on it for nearly a year. The as-yet-untitled release was recorded entirely by founding band members Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden without the assistance of a full band, just like how they recorded 2010's Congratulations. The two albums diverge in similarity when it comes to their respective sounds, though: Goldwasser and VanWyngarden tell Rolling Stone that the new songs are more heavily influenced by house music and electronic artists such as Aphex Twin than anything they've done before.

Goldwasser adds that they're "not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it… There's no illusion on [Columbia Records'] part that that we're going to turn into a Top 40 band." The more than one million people who bought the band's poppy debut, 2007's Oracular Spectacular, may feel differently.
