Michael Mann and Paul Haggis developing film about the hunt for gold

Michael Mann, whose projects we still look forward to even if Public Enemies was a bit of a letdown, is reportedly interested in tackling Gold, described as a contemporary Treasure Of The Sierra Madre-type thriller about the hunt for the precious metal that will form the entire basis of our economy once it collapses and we revert to bartering shiny things for food and potable water. The project is still in the early stages of development, based on a spec writing sample from Friday Night Lights and Chicago Code writer-producers Patrick Massett and John Zinman that caught the eye of Paul Haggis, who will have his own race against the clock to produce the film before the agents of Scientology put him down for good. Of course, we’re not sure why anyone would need to “hunt” for gold; according to the commercials we’ve seen, it’s as easy as combing your house for your broken and unwanted gold, then sticking it an envelope and making tons of money. Have we so quickly forgotten the lessons of Ed McMahon and MC Hammer?
