Michelle MacLaren to make her big-screen directorial debut, again
TV producer and director Michelle MacLaren—whose credits include Breaking Bad, The X-Files, The Walking Dead, and Game Of Thrones, a.k.a. pretty much every show you’ve loved for the last however many years—is gearing up to once again make the move to film, after dropping out of directing Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman last year. Variety is reporting that MacLaren has been tapped to direct The Nightingale, an adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s World War II coming-of-age story. The New York Times Bestseller—published in 2015—tells the story of two French sisters who struggle to survive the German occupation of their home.
MacLaren, meanwhile, has been keeping busy since walking away from DC’s most famous Amazon last year, over disagreements about the film’s proposed tone and scope. Most recently, she directed an episode of HBO’s upcoming Westworld, and serves as an executive producer and pilot director for David Simon’s prostitution drama The Deuce, which is set to debut in 2017. Also, The Nightingale isn’t technically MacLaren’s first feature film—she directed a cheapie, direct-to-video horror movie called Population 436 back in 2006—but it does represent the first time she’ll get to show off all the blood-and-guts expertise she picked up hacking down wildlings and zombies on TV on the silver (and red, eventually, we assume) screen.
