Variety reports that True Detective’s Michelle Monaghan has been cast as the female lead in a new drama about a cult, because those are in right now. The Way—which was created by Jessica Goldberg and is being executive produced by Parenthood’s Jason Katims—will feature Monaghan as Sarah Cleary, a member of a family struggling with “relationships, marriage, and power” while at the center of a “controversial movement.” Mike Cahill, who wrote and directed the elegant indie science-fiction film Another Earth, has signed on to direct the pilot.
The show sounds a lot like Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, but the chances that it will be as good as the best movie of the decade so far are pretty slim, so start lowering your expectations just to be safe. The first season will premiere on Hulu sometime next winter and will run for 10 episodes.
