Michelle Williams, Laura Dern, and Kristen Stewart embody Certain Women in this trailer
Over the course of the last decade, Kelly Reichardt has been growing into one of the most important voices in independent cinema. Her films generally tend to be intimate and leisurely paced, but those adjectives should not be read as euphemisms for “cheap” and “slow.” The five films the writer-director has released to date—among them Wendy and Lucy and Night Moves—appear designed to smolder slowly in the back of your consciousness while branding it with a permanent impression.
That seems to be the case for her latest film as well. Based on three disparate short stories by PEN/Malamud Award winner Maile Meloy, Certain Women drops in on the intersecting lives of three Montana women—played by Michelle Williams, Laura Dern, and Kristen Stewart—as they each slam headlong into adversity while attempting to make their own way in the world. The film has received overall positive reviews since it premiered at Sundance back in January, with The A.V. Club’s A.A. Dowd noting how well Reichardt nails “the open-ended mystery and vividness of great short fiction, the sense that you’re being plopped down for a few meaningful minutes into a hyper-specific space.”
Certain Women will arrive in theaters on October 14.
