HBO cancelled Mike White’s Enlightened back in March, just as it had begun to rack up critical acclaim. Naturally, that left White feeling disheartened: He sounded defeated but proud in his WTF appearance, which aired a few weeks before the cancellation was handed down. But tied into news that HBO had re-upped Girls co-executive producer Murray Miller to a two-year overall deal was word that Miller would be working with White on a new comedy project entitled Mr. Romance. The show is based on Joshuah Bearman’s 2010 McSweeney’s article “The Only Muscle I Can’t Control: In Search Of The Next Romance Novel Cover Man,” about the annual Mr. Romance Cover Model Competition. White will produce while Miller will co-write the script with Danish comedian Casper Christensen. Mr. Romance keeps White under the HBO umbrella for now—and definitely opens up the possibility of Fabio sneaking in for a cameo.
