Mikey Dread RIP

Okay, this week officially sucks: Reggae legend Mikey Dread died Saturday of a brain tumor at his Connecticut home at the age of 54. Born Michael Campbell, Dread began his career as a radio DJ in Jamaica in 1976 before trying his hand at producing and performing: His late-'70s and early-'80s albums, including hands-down classics like Dread At The Controls and World War III, were daring, spirited leaps into the future for dub and roots. Besides his distinct production style and voice–which could veer from apocalyptic to bubbly in the same song–he became widely known through his collaboration with The Clash on the single "Bankrobber" and the album Sandinista!. Dread had since worked in radio and television production in the U.S., all while maintaining a hectic performing and recording schedule–including a 2004 team-up with Seal and a cover of The Clash's "Silicone On Sapphire" for last year's Sandinista! tribute album, The Sandinista! Project.
