While the rest of the TV-watching world moans about the two-year break between seasons of Game Of Thrones or Westworld, some of us are over here growing mighty impatient waiting for the return of Mindhunter. Produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron, the true crime series—based on FBI profiler John Douglas’ book of the same name—premiered its first season way back in October 2017. As Theron confirmed during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, the second season of the series will premiere this August, making it just under two years since we last caught up with Jonathan Groff’s troubled agent Holden Ford (the show’s proxy for Douglas) and his team. Aside from returning co-stars Holt McCallany and Anna Torv, little else is known about season two of the series, though Fincher previously told Billboard that it will concern the Atlanta Child Murders, the controversial case covered in the Atlanta Monster podcast. For the record, Douglas believes law enforcement apprehended the right man when they arrested Wayne Williams for the horrific killings, which took place between 1979 and 1989 (Williams’ guilt has long been up for debate).

During a recent chat with Vulture, Douglas revealed that the second season of Mindhunter will feature another famous killer: David Berkowitz, aka Son Of Sam. “They are going to have David Berkowitz, as well as Charles Manson,” Douglas said, seemingly confirming a prior report that Fincher had cast Damon Herriman as Manson in season two. (Herriman also plays Manson in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.) Manson’s involvement isn’t completely surprising, given that Groff’s Agent Ford expressed a fervent desire to interview the infamous cult leader, who was already in prison in season one. Berkowitz had also been imprisoned by the time the Atlanta Child Murders unfolded. It’s unclear if Edmund Kemper, the serial killer featured prominently in season one, will return for the second season. Cameron Britton played Kemper to chilling (and occasionally darkly comedic) perfection, so it’d be fantastic to see him again.
