Mindy Kaling, Tonya Harding, and a meta take on Titanic lead the 2016 Black List

Mindy Kaling, Tonya Harding, Madonna, and Lax Mandis—not to be confused with Max Landis—all make appearances in one way or another on this year’s Black List, the annual collection of Hollywood film executives’ favorite unproduced screenplays. However, Kaling’s contribution, an untitled script about women in late-night comedy, is well on the way to becoming a reality with Emma Thompson attached. The same goes for Steven Rogers’ take on the Harding saga, I, Tonya, which Margot Robbie has boarded. Meanwhile, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman also pops up on the list with Life Itself, another multigenerational story bound to make you weep that will star Oscar Isaac.

The entries on the Black List are ranked by how many mentions they received, and the most by far went to Elyse Hollander’s Blond Ambition, which purports to tell the tale of Madonna in the ’80s before she became famous. Other projects about already notable people include the self-explanatory Letters From Rosemary Kennedy, Linda And Monica about Linda Tripp and Monica Lewinsky, Voyagers about Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan, and Lee about Alexander McQueen. There’s also the seemingly meta Untitled Lax Mandis Project and James Cameron’s Titanic. The synopsis for the former, which we assume is a reference to screenwriter Max Landis, is: “A frustrated film exec at odds with the state of his industry is forced to work with the one person who is making him question everything.” The latter is described as a Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead version of Titanic.
