Mission: Impossible 5 gets a new name and a teaser trailer

Every few years, Tom Cruise issues a reminder that he used to be a pretty likable movie star in the form of another Mission: Impossible sequel. Truly, it’s a testament to the power of a good action flick that people are willing to ignore years of Scientology-related freakouts just to see Tom Cruise strap on some magnetic gloves and climb up a building. Cruise’s latest peace-offering to those of us who haven’t gone Clear, Mission: Impossible 5, suffered a setback recently, but things are back on track and the film now has a hot, new name and a teaser trailer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie has now been christened Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation, and if you think that name is a little too close to Star Wars: Rogue One, then congratulations! You might be as easily confused as Hollywood thinks you are. THR says Paramount officially registered Rogue Nation before Lucasfilm and Disney grabbed Rogue One, so Paramount could’ve technically sued and prevented them from using that name—after all, they share one word, so they’re practically the same. Instead, Disney agreed not to refer to Rogue One in “any promotional materials aimed at the general consumer” this summer. That means, for the next few months, the word “rogue” can only be used to refer to the new Mission: Impossible movie. Not the famous X-Man who can steal other mutants’ powers. Not the recent Assassin’s Creed game. Not even the Nissan vehicle. It’s all Mission: Impossible.

As part of these name-announcing festivities, Paramount also released a quick teaser for Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation. It features Tom Cruise without a shirt on, Tom Cruise riding a motorcycle, Tom Cruise catching a ride on an airplane (wink), Alec Baldwin with a shirt on, and some kind of flute gun. Rogue Nation will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, and it’ll be in theaters on July 31. According to the end of this teaser, a proper trailer will be released tomorrow.
