Mission: Impossible's Rebecca Ferguson joins Men In Black and Doctor Sleep

The entire movie industry apparently opened up its wallets this week and started throwing money at the Daily Beast story about the big McDonald’s Monopoly scam, all in hopes of turning it into the next big true crime story about a guy who rigged a fast food contest. Ben Affleck and Fox ended up pulling the winning ticket off a box of fries, though, so now we can all look forward to watching Matt Damon screw a giant restaurant franchise out of millions of dollars. Not all pop culture news can be so delicious, though, so let’s dig in to some stories that aren’t about McDonald’s.

• Mission: Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson has already landed a pair of big roles less than a week after the release of Fallout. She’ll be appearing alongside Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth in Men In Black, and she’ll play evil cult leader Rose The Hat in Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Doctor Sleep (Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining). • Hey, speaking of Doctor Sleep, Zahn McClarnon is set to join Ewan McGregor (adult Danny Torrance) and Ferguson (who you just read about) in Flanagan’s adaptation. McClarnon is best known as Akecheta from Westworld, and he’ll be playing Ferguson’s right-hand man Crow Daddy in Doctor Sleep. [via Variety]
• SNL’s Aidy Bryant has landed the lead role in Shrill, Hulu’s adaptation of blogger Lindy West’s memoir of the same name. She’ll be playing an aspiring journalist on a mission to prove that the world is wrong to judge her for her appearance. The show has been picked up for an eight-episode run. • Glen Powell, the guy from Netflix’s Set It Up, missed out on the role of Lil’ Goose for the Top Gun sequel, but Paramount is just going to be put him in the movie anyway. We don’t know who he’ll be playing, but maybe it’ll be the son of somebody else from the first movie. [via The Hollywood Reporter]
• It looks like original Ju-On: The Grudge producer Taka Ichise has a grudge against the new America-based remake of The Grudge. He says he had an agreement with Lionsgate’s Good Universe production company that would give him a producer credit and an “agreed upon fee,” but the company is supposedly refusing to honor the deal. • We just reported on Fox’s plan to make a 24 prequel series about a young Jack Bauer, but the network is also planning a spin-off show that would be a legal thriller about trying to prevent the execution of a prisoner that’s set to happen in—get this—24 hours. Without knowing more details, it sounds like that one might have the potential to actually feature Kiefer Sutherland. [via /Film]
• Temple Grandin star Julia Ormond is heading to BBC One for her first lead role on British TV. She’ll be starring in Gold Digger, a drama about a 60-year-old woman who falls in love with a much younger man. Naturally, everybody assumes that he takes her money when she’s in need and that he’s a triflin’ friend indeed. [via Deadline]
